October 2nd, 2009
Back when we were in the passionate throes of dating, we did everything we could to convince our man that we were everything he ever wanted in a woman. We cooked, we baked, we sang as all the animals of the forest came to help us with our chores; we were domestic. We may have even convinced him we lurve football just as much as he does, going so far as to don a tacky-ass, polyester jersey. Go team.
Now that we’re married, we no longer have to pretend that we’re Snow White (sucker!), but we do have to admit that the weekends in the fall are pretty dull as we watch the hubby fall into a football coma. If you also suffer from the loneliness that comes with being a Football Widow, take a gander at this week’s Phoenix Picks. You’re sure to find something better to do than compete with the Cardinals. |

The Secret’s Out
Phoenix Picks seems to be a favorite stopover for the stork. Just when one of us has a beautiful bambina, another one of us gets, well, a positive sign (YAY, MELISSA!). And we couldn’t be more thrilled. We played it cool at first as we’re not the types to put it all out there at the word “go.” But two months and one ultrasound later, we’re off to the races, and we’re ready to rock some fancy new baby gear.
At this stage of the game, we’re not ready for Diaper Genies and Boppies. We want luxurious layettes and soft blankies. So imagine our delight when we stumbled upon Stephanie’s. This fabulous little boutique has been a best-kept-secret in Phoenix among haute mamas, but with the store’s new hard-to-miss Scottsdale storefront, we think the cat might be out of the bag.
With a fun selection of high-end gifts and sundries as well as an in-store design center and some of the swankiest chandeliers we’ve seen in a while, this truly is a heaven on earth for a mama-to-be—or better yet, someone shopping for a mama-to-be. Hint, hint.

Upper Crust
We’re already stocking up on sweaters and leggings but that doesn’t mean we’re ready to bid a loving farewell to summer. Sure it was damn hot, but this sleepy, hot summer was a pretty good one. We’ve managed to stay poolside, sip cocktails with friends, and bar hop from happy hour, enjoying recession-friendly prices. We can’t complain—even though our tanned skin isn’t getting any sun relief and we’re rocking shorts and tank tops in October.
Crust Pizza made our list when we found out they offered half-priced bottles of wine every Monday, all day. Who doesn’t need a bottle of wine after a Monday morning at the office? And, surprise! Their pizza is just as good as the wine. Their oddly shaped Rusticas pleased our Manhattan-born husband who wakes up begging for N.Y. squares.
Any pizza joint that has arugula and prosciutto on the same dough is almost better than Daniel Craig holding a Walther PPK and sipping on a Vesper martini. As Ben Gibbard would say, “this is the sound of settling,” but we’re not complaining.

Ruby Tuesday
Peering into the empty storefront at DC Ranch, we pined for the racks of fashionable must-haves we used to uncover at Ruby. Feeling melancholy, we looked down at our jewel encrusted slippers and clicked them three times while repeating, “There’s no place like Ruby.”
We just couldn’t get over the fact that one of our fave boutiques was M.I.A.
Then suddenly, we were standing in front of Ruby’s new location amid the grand re-opening of the store. Reunited with our friends: Poleci, Tibi, and For Joseph, we were surrounded by beloved racks filled with the latest tees by Lakes New York and all sorts of leggings soothed our frayed nerves. With so much wonderful, we slipped off our blue jumper and slippers and transformed from a naïve girl from Kansas to a hot little minx living in the Valley. The best part: the free pair of Hanky Panky lace undies with any purchase.
Surely, we’ll miss Scarecrow and the Tin Man, but heck, they weren’t really into fashion anyway.

Endless (Shoe) Love
Our mother always told us that there are "many fish in the sea." And that there are endless opportunities to find a great "catch." We are either swimming upstream in a river of catfish, or hanging out at places that attract freaks and geeks (not in a chic way).
But there are endless options for shoe opportunities. One of our fave spots is this website, which carries as many shoes necessary to cure any sort of love blues. Don't miss their selections from Giuseppe Zanotti, Marc Jacobs and Maria Sharapova for Cole Haan, too!

We Heart Factory
"In the future everyone will be famous for 15 minutes."
Maybe so, Mr. Warhol. And if that should be true, we pray our fifteen wasn't our 5th-grade spelling bee champ photo in the local paper but will be wearing one of I Love Factory's fabulous pieces to a beautiful bash. Composed of ribbons and lace, and lots of use of black and white, this Brooklyn duo's collection hit the masses via GG and will be seen at exclusive retailers and here. We think Edie would approve.

Shark’s Tale
We spy with our little eye something cute and evil. Dangerous by design, sneaky by nature, and one of the world's most fearsome creatures.
The token bad boy that stole your heart? No. Tell him and his crotch rocket to ride off on a permanent vacay. We're talking sharks. Like this bejeweled gold number from Cheeky Monkey Jewelry, complete with a fair-trade ruby, sapphire or recycled diamond for an eye. We’re hoping it will fend off any incoming bottom-feeders.

We just can’t get it up for Edward (too sparkly) or Bill Compton (too uptight). Eric of “True Blood,” however? Yes. Please. Where can we score a Norwegian vamp of our own?
