  PHOENIX PICKS
life + style in the Valley of the Sun
August 7th, 2009

It’s the homeward stretch! Any day now we’ll be welcoming baby number two into the world and, after nine months of incubating, we are totally counting the days until we get the remnants of our old body back.

If there’s one thing that’s totally not our forté it’s rocking maternity clothes in 114-degree weather. At this point, nothing is comfortable or fashionable. And what was once regarded as cute prego woman has been replaced with a helluva a lot of swollenness, engorgement, and lots of polka dot ensembles (how in the heck did that happen?)

Maternal excitement is oozing out of our ears as we prepare for the big day, but we can’t help but feel overjoyed at the thought of no more empire-waist shenanigans and wearing our beloved heels once again.

The Lap (Dog) of Luxury

Our lives have changed dramatically since we brought home our first little pup. The alarm clock has been replaced by early-morning face licks, and suddenly we walk dutifully toward poop rather than running away from it. Our home officially has more dog toys and treats than human ones—but we don’t mind.  From the first moment we looked into those puppiest of all puppy dog eyes, we knew we were done for.

The most besotted pup mommies are sniffing their way to Oh My Dog boutique + spa. Founder Jackie Bacha, a dog lover as much as a trend tracker, believes that your pooch can benefit from a little luxury, too. This treasure of a boutique boasts two master groomers, unique pooch apparel and accessories, and holistic and organic food. OMD will even set up a custom party and photo shoot for lucky birthday pups or pup-ettes.

Pooch couture and organic treats? Check! World-class groomers and bespoke birthday parties and events? Double check!  oggie dine-out events and “Doga”? Che—say what?! Yes! OMD even hosts yoga classes for you and your dog the first Tuesday of every month.

Captivating Curry

We are girls who live by the motto “eat, drink and be merry.” But we need our eats to be spicy; our drinks to be a fruit-forward syrah or a dry, Old World sangiovese; and we need our men to be just as fired up and sexy as the legs on our wine glass and the spice on our food in order to make us merry. Sound picky? Wait until you try and take us on a date.

Well … our insatiable, bottomless thirst for good food, red wine and boys was quenched as we sat at the bar of a local Indian food café and sipped our 91-point syrah (not Wine Spectator 91 points, but Phoenix Picks 91 points) and enjoyed the healthy fusions of Indian staples like chicken curry, spinach and tofu (a.k.a. Palak Paneer) and their incredible carrot soufflé with carrot shavings, ricotta cheese and rose water.

Turns out the boy-man sitting next to us might have been a little spicier than the curry, but we’re not complaining—sometimes that is to be expected (wink).

The Inner Styling of a Fashion Maven

We’ve been on the fashion faux-pas chopping block enough to know that it’s best we’re put together like a Ralph Lauren model when we make our rounds. Sadly, though, that innate fashion sense falls way short when we attempt any kind of interior design. Instead of matching bedding and towel sets in our bedrooms and bathrooms, it’s a hodgepodge of mismatched patterns and colors reminiscent of our days in college. Psychedelic, yes. Classy, no.

When friends finally held an intervention, we headed to Bella Dimora at the Shops at Gainey Village. Inside, we were immediately transported to a spa-like atmosphere replete with scented candles, elegant bedding and towel sets, and accessories worthy of an episode on MTV’s cribs. Here you’ll find designers like Firenze, Matouk, Sferra, and Yves Delorme, and eco-friendly homeowners will happily find an organic line of linens designed by Peacock Alley.

With colors like berry, azure, leaf, and chocolate, we knew this boutique could turn our Raggedy Ann-looking turf into a Barbie dream house in no time. If you still need help, they offer interior design services, as well.

Pretty in Purple

In general, we love to shop—obviously. Our favorite season to shop for is fall, and this year, we’re planning a total wardrobe revamp—edgier, bolder and more fashion-forward. Naturally, this means checking out the latest at our favorite new high-style website, 80s Purple.

From moderately-priced lines to high-end designers, rebellious street fashion and comfortable casual wear, it’s our new Mecca. Our favorites are the jumpers and dresses from Fremont and the rocker-chic necklaces from Hello Drama. Lovin’ it!

Bette Davis Eyes

We’ve been pretty up front with you about our mascara addiction. We’ve tried them all, from drugstore bargains to designer “investment mascaras,” and frankly we’re not sure there’s that much of a difference. So we decided to try something else—actually renewing our lashes instead of glooping them up.

neuLash to the rescue! It’s an active eyelash technology™ that can naturally improve the appearance of your lashes and brows… in as little as two weeks! It conditions and protects them, so they’re fuller and healthier. Love!

One of a Kind

We love things that are one-of-a-kind, because truth be told, we kinda love having something that everyone admires but no one else has. Is that wrong? If it is, then when it comes to Necklush, we don’t wanna be right.

Is it a scarf? A necklace? A cowl? It’s all of the above! This all-in-one design with multiple seamless loops and dozens of prints and color options makes for endless possibilities. It’s simple, modern and fashion-forward—we can’t wait to show ours off.

Free as a Dragonfly

The closing of the Scottsdale staple, Pischke’s Paradise, left us local, longtime Phoenicians with an empty feeling. But that hole was filled when Jene Shaffstall and Ann Pepper took the neighborhood’s favorite pub dishes and moved them to a new Scottsdale café where regulars can again enjoy drinks, dishes and a familiar face.
