life + style in the Valley of the Sun
June 20th, 2008

Our original intro was about how we’ll never be able to squeeze our cottage-cheese thighs into an itsy-bitsy teeny-weeny—oh, hell, you get the rest. Anyway, we took a good look in the mirror, and while we do admit there are things that could definitely use some work, we realized there's more to us than having that perfect size 8 derrière.

So we treated ourselves to a shopping spree and bought a glorious sea-blue tulle dress that not only throws curves our way like a steroid-crazed pitcher and hides our thighs, but takes us back to the days of our girlhood princess fantasies. In a shout-out to our SATC girl, Carrie, we also bought an über-cute pair of pink pumps and some studded ballerina slippers, so we can be either nice or naughty!

So, we end today's sermon by saying that no matter your size, you can always find something at your local boutique to make you feel like the diva sexpot you know you are! And if you’re not feeling it, send us an email at picks@phoenixpicks.com –we’ll be happy to tell you how wonderful you are.

Olive You Heathcliff!

When we were wee snarkettes, we pined away in our rooms reading Little Women and longed for the day when we could wear crinoline skirts. Romantic men would shower us with golden trinkets and give us songbirds in cages as we stared out the window, our faces illuminated by a single candle.

Unfortunately, we grew up and realized we were more likely to wear some hideous concoction our crazy mother whipped up on her Singer, and boys would "gift" us with dollar-store necklaces and kisses that ground their braces into ours.

Recently, our romantic side was revived when we stepped foot in Olive Annie’s boho-chic boutique. Chock full of Victorian jewelry, flowing cotton dresses, fancy knickknacks and shabby chic treasures, we were transplanted back to the days of poring over our Emily Bronte hardbacks and interpretive dancing to Kate Bush’s Wuthering Heights. This quaint little boutique is a perfect 115-degree weather escape, and comes complete with one-of-a-kind scores, a bohemian ghost and a rising phoenix from the ashes tale! Ask about it!

Chasing the Cupcake

Feeling liberated by a free babysitting stint by the mother-in-law, we venture out to work off a few post-partum LBs at the gym. We’re feeling pretty sporty running a 20-minute mile until the perky gym rat on the neighboring treadmill starts sprinting like a yearling filly on her way to claim the Triple Crown. The encounter serves as a not-so-gentle reminder that we are built for endurance, not speed.

On the same day as said workout, we learn that a new Sprinkles Cupcakes bakery has opened in Scottsdale. With this new knowledge, we naturally make plans to drown our insecurities in buttercream frosting and Madagascar bourbon vanilla.

Sprinkles co-founders Candace and Charles Nelson have taken a classic favorite to gourmet heights, baking cupcakes—and only cupcakes—fresh daily from scratch. The Beverly Hills-born bakery enjoys praise from waifish A-list celebrities we all know don’t really eat there. (Sorry, Kelly Ripa. Those bird legs don’t lie.) Decadent flavors include peanut butter/chocolate, ginger lemon, chai latte, and Sprinkles’ signature red velvet. A little taste of heaven for endurance runners everywhere.

Day Trippers

We’ve def outgrown our college binge-drinking days at Dos Gringos, yet we still find joy in tying one on during the day. Imagine our delight when we discovered we can still drink to our hearts’ content during the day without looking like swollen beer pigs.

We love a great deal, too, and the fact that we can get food and drunk… we mean drinks… for a great price and still feel sophisticated while doing so is a Saturday afternoon well spent. And 56 East Bar and Kitchen offers a kick arse Happy Hour on the patio from 11:30 am to 6:30 pm, Monday–Saturday, so every day can be a happy one!

With ample misters (and plenty of friendly beefcake for the single gals) you'll stay cool as you sip your Pinot Grigio and nosh on the Caprese Insalata. For those a little more daring, try the $6 Cosmo, SATC-style. Be prepared for a voodoo-tastic adventure—56 East adds dry ice to their Cosmos, giving them a witchy aura. And if you plan ahead, you can use their complimentary shuttle service—no bologna sandwiches for us, Sheriff Joe!

Tattooing the Tot

The first thing we did when we settled into our college dorm room was add some forbidden ink. It was liberating at the time, but these days we're thankful our tat is tucked away where we rarely see it.

That's not to say when we saw Babi Canvas infant gear—created from the partnership of Melis and Living Canvas Tattoo—we weren't oohing and awwing over its cuteness. And for some added oomph, your baby's tattooed onesie can be blinged out with Swarovski crystals! Ka-Ching!

Joining the Sisterhood

We fancy wearing poison rings and jewels created with the bold women that we read about in history class in mind. That’s why Wendy Brandes jewelry haunts us in our sleep. It causes us to contemplate forgoing food—just so we can possess the Matilda necklace and the Queen Min ring.

Ultimately, every woman should possess a Wendy B. jewel. Not only will you feel like you were born an Onassis, but it's also a chance to flaunt that $150,000 masters degree in English!

Brown-Bagging It

We miss our Sunday morning jaunt to the Hollywood Farmer's Market where we loaded our eco-friendly bag with locally-grown goodies. Nothing beats biting into a tomato that actually tastes like a tomato; or an organic salad that's so fresh it doesn't need a bottle of ranch dressing.

For $25 you can get a brown bag from Chef to Chef—right here in PHX—full of delicious seasonal produce from Valley farmers. Perfect for the kitchen wizard who dares to make magic with rhubarb!

As you can tell we’re on an ’80s kick. This week we rocked neon pink, a turquoise tiger-striped scarf and jazz shoes (Elvis Costello-style). So it’s only natural that you’d see us in our best Cyndi Lauper getup every Wednesday night at the Rose and Crown. We hope you’ll join us!
