  PHOENIX PICKS
life + style in the Valley of the Sun
June 6th, 2008

It's been one of those weeks. If there was a rock nearby that was big enough to hide behind you'd find us there licking our wounds. Car accident (check), visit to the dentist (check), recommendation for braces (check), deadline anxiety and stress zits (check), an extra five pounds (check).

We've tried our hardest to stave off the beyond-geekdom that plagued our high-school days. We found a great hairdresser, we mastered the art of accessories, we waxed our eyebrows, we hid our insecurities with fabulous shoes, we even replaced out bottle-cap junior high glasses with contacts. But slowly it has weaseled its way back in; we first noticed when we caught our full length, ragamuffin reflection sporting the nerd glasses and our favorite faded black cardigan. We're definitely pushing the limits, but now having to pair them with braces in our mid-30s?!? … we can’t go back.

If you listen very closely you can hear our plea for help: "Somebody please call the fashion police... now!"

Makeup Artistry

We like to think of ourselves as modern women, dedicated to the advancement of the female cause. We even attended a women’s college, enduring incredulous questions from the high-school boyfriend like, “Isn’t that a lesbian school?” Um, yes. The mere concentration of college-aged women spawns Sapphic slumber parties and pillow fights. (He wasn’t exactly enlightened.)

That said, we secretly choose our nail salons based on their selections of OK! and US magazines. If their ‘scrips run dry, so does our patronage. We can paint our own toenails, but we’re dying to know whose dimply bum it is in that bikini, and how to get our eyelashes to look like Jessica Alba’s.

Fortunately for closet celebrity voyeurs like us, Zethina brings nearly 20 years of Hollywood makeup savvy home to the West Valley. Cut from the same cloth as last-nameless icons Cher and Madonna, Zethina produces a line of mineral makeup, which is available at her new skin care boutique in Glendale. Other celeb-worthy services include makeup application lessons, eyebrow shaping, airbrush tanning, custom facials, and—can we get an Amen?—eyelash extensions.

Urbanista

We'll admit it… as much as we like to be the shining star at the office, there are some days when we can't get it up for work. We fiddly-fart around for a couple hours, making a halfhearted stab at our 8-page report, take as many potty breaks as possible, and then admit defeat.

Those days are spent with our bestest cubie-mate,  lurking around the gossip sites to see who's diddling who, making catty remarks about the office troll's latest fashion catastrophe, sneaking off to Target for some bargain finds and taking long, luxurious lunches to whine about the work we're not currently doing.

One of our favorite lunch getaways is Cibo in downtown Phoenix: Chic café by day, urban pizzeria by night. We can't even begin to tell you about our favorite hot sandwich, the vegetariano, with chewy bread and melty cheese, smothering savory veggies. Oh, and did we mention their Nutella crepes with vanilla ice cream? Our ovaries practically shrieked in delight.

One Haute Momma

When we've pondered the idea of having a baby we obsess over how large-Marge our derrieres would become. It is enough to kill any thought of procreating. But, lately we long for a mini-me in tow, especially after witnessing the latest breed of chic soccer moms. We want to be haute mommas, too! So now that we’ve discovered Petite Chateau, we can breathe… well, not really because we’ve crammed ourselves into last summer’s pencil skirt, but you get the point.

Housing baby furniture, clothes, and adorable accessories for baby and the expecting Mom, Petite Chateau makes motherhood appear hip. We adore the “I Am A Boob Man” onesie (too bad this doesn’t come in our hubby’s size) and matching skullcap for the little one.

And the crap-load of diapers, bottles and other miscellaneous baby loot momma has to carry around when she leaves the house? It doesn’t mean she can’t do it in style: check out the Mia Bossi couture diaper bag in exotic pink, with snakeskin accents, faux fur changing pad and polished hardware. It's a definite must-have for an aspiring MILF.

Oh Oh Oh It's Magic!

There's nothing more horrific than having to go number #2 in the lover's abode. We've mastered all the tricks: numerous flushings, running water, matches; we even carry perfume for those awkward moments. We relish the fact that lover thinks of us as odor-free.

Just A Drop keeps the illusion alive by eliminating 98% of personal odors. Save your reputation--no more eau de poo at le boyfriend's house—and no more awkward office bathroom moments, either!

Band Aids

We walk a fine line with our music infatuations. Almost a groupie but not enough to hook up with famous hipsters. We truly dig the music, Bebe Buell-style.

So we're thinking a cool screen print of one of our fave bands may make for a nice update in the apartment. Chicagoan artist Jay Ryan started making posters for his band, his friends' bands and the clubs they played. Now he’s working for all the big names and tons of festivals. Cheap and original—better than groupiedom any day!

Your Arsenal

We're easy. Put some Morrissey on a mix tape and give us a gift certificate for shopping and you'll discover we're the most charming, easy-going gals in town. One of our favorite pastimes is checking out of reality, putting Viva Hate on repeat and drooling over the latest finds at Bona Drag, an awesome online boutique.

Happiness is achievable, and it comes in spontaneous purchases like studded ballet slippers, knee-length gladiator sandals and a week's worth of jumpers and skirts that send us back to 1992.
