life + style in the Valley of the Sun
April 4th, 2008

We thank our lucky stars for our girlfriends.  If it wasn't for them we'd never indulge in shoe shopping ecstasy, buy glitter eyeliner or try watermelon-flavored lip plumpers.  But more importantly they remind us of who we are and the roads we've traveled. They are the shoulders we cry on when we can't weather the storm, and our wingmen when we need a partner for Tom Petty's part on "Leather and Lace” at karaoke.

Our friends are also good at forgiving. They don't hate us when we forget their birthdays, when it takes two weeks to respond to their novella emails, or when we stand them up for the lusty bohunk in tight jeans who invited us over for grilled octopus salad.  Sure they never let us live it down afterward, but hey, that's why we’re BFFs.

So in honor of our fabulous gal pals and the fact that one of our favorite Valley boutiques now has its spring collection in stock, we're giving you and your girlfriends a chance to forward this email to 5 of your best friends and cc picks@phoenixpicks.com to win a $20 gift certificate to Therapy! And like the theme song to our favorite television show growing up ("The Golden Girls") we just want to say, "thank you for being a friend."

Wooly Bullies

There is a particular breed of woman who can stay out all night, sipping champagne in some swanky, low-lit lounge and still manage to wake up in the morning looking more Amelie and less old French whore. We, on the other hand, have one cocktail and stay out an hour past bedtime on a school night and end up with a look that no amount of under-eye concealer and French press coffee can remedy. In this case, our solution is to create a distraction with our wardrobe.

To our good fortune, the downtown Phoenix boutique, Bullies in a China Shoppe, home to all things blingy and beautiful, makes it super easy to elevate your belle-factor under any circumstances. Bedazzled fleur-de-lis and glittering princess-crown chandeliers surround you as you peruse their “shabby-chic-goes-to-Paris”-style clothing, jewelry, furniture and accessories.

Currently ensconced in the historic Coronado District of downtown Phoenix, the store will be relocating to the East Valley come summer. A moving sale is already underway, so prance on in before the end of May to take advantage!

A Royal Decadence

We were always goody-goody in college. While our peers were learning the delicate art of keg stands and bong rips, we were interning for the English department. We had no desire to join the throngs of drunken, prancing sorostitutes in the homecoming parade; we'd rather clean our adopted highway.

Our sophomore year, the cafeteria installed a coffee bar, and we developed an addiction that could rival that of a crack fiend: caffeine. It was a sickness; we even kept a forbidden coffee pot in our dorm room.

It was with withdrawal shakes that we entered the Royal Coffee Bar, jonesing for a fix. While they couldn't connect a coffee IV directly into our veins, they did serve us gorgeous cups of joe with handmade cream art on top. We also sampled their chai latte (which is far better than any mass-produced tea we've ever had) along with their rich Italian sodas. With the casual, chic atmosphere, we were content to sit and let the caffeine calm our trembling hands.

Wino Forever

There’s not much that can keep us away from a robust red and a crisp citrus white on a hot Arizona day. Truth be told we love our wine as much as we love our D&G sunglasses after a night on the the town. So when we heard the owner of Sportsmans was opening Fine’s cellar, we couldn’t be more excited. Located in the heart of Old Town, it’s a great spot to get the wine tipsy brewing.

Fine’s offers dine-in and on-the-go meals with two distinct sides of the restaurant. Rise and shine for an early morning coffee and non-traditional breakfast burrito. Sleeping in? You’ll find a gelato bar on the other side that pairs well with most of the wines on the list. We suggest sampling one (or three) of the 100 wines by the glass and pairing it with the mac and cheese (or the duck a la orange salad) for a perfect afternoon treat.

More than 800 wines are poured tableside and priced just right—we found tons of wines to fit our couture taste … and our thrift-shop budget.

A Book That’s Just for You

Growing up, we knew where the wild things were and would always say “Goodnight Moon,” but we never had the luxury of reading a bedtime story about the most fascinating little girls on the planet … ourselves!

So imagine our delight in finding books that can be customized with names of siblings, pets and friends—even favorite foods. Sure, such a book might have given us delusions of grandeur, but that can’t happen to kids today … can it?

Ba-Ba-Black Sheep

On our fat days, we rock the black ensemble and eclectic jewelry. It’s a system that works for us and probably explains our penchant for gaudy baubles and why our closet is filled with shades of black.

The neck jewel in current rotation is a Black Sheep and Prodigal Sons necklace made from an ivory piano key, with the scrimshaw handiwork of vintage whalers. It captures our favorite daydream of making romance with a burly sailor and then losing him to the sea.

Grape Expectations

We can’t stand the way we look or feel after a night of sucking down a bottle of wine—but sometimes it can’t be avoided. Recently, however, we’ve become infatuated with wine for another reason—staving off old age by soaking in a red-wine bath!

That’s right. We’re also slathering on creams and serums made from French Chardonnay grapes, and we’ve already noticed the difference—our windows to the world are brighter and our skin is more youthful and taut. It's skinfully decadent!

If you don't see us around town blame it on the allergies. Our cherry red, constantly dripping nose has us feeling uber insecure. We're currently in hiding indoors, with Neil Young on our iPod. Hope you are feeling less congested and enjoying this lovely weather. Only about a month left before it turns into that famous "dry heat" ... whatever that means!

Oh, and don’t forget to tell your friends about Phoenix Picks! Don’t you feel better already???
