life + style in the Valley of the Sun

March 21st, 2008
We're currently in a hotel somewhere in downtown Los Angeles, minutes away from the destruction we're about to cause as we plow through Melrose Avenue and Fred Segal. We spent the entire airplane ride making our list of must-haves for another desert summer. We've got Talitha Getty on the mind; and a plan to fill the empty suitcase with bold tribal-esque prints, uber girly sheer dresses, Moroccan tunics and tranny-envy Grecian platforms. With our new haircut, a few outlandish summer pieces and a catwalk strut in 5-inch heels, we refuse to go quietly into our mid-30s.
After a day of intense shopping and the last flight back to Phoenix, we're going to need some TLC. But what good is self-indulgence when you can't share it with your BFF? So be the first one to forward this email to five of your friends and CC picks@phoenixpicks.com for a FREE facial by Sofia Facials and Waxing—it’s what we like to call a jump start into summer! |

Made in the Shade
Lately, our prized art pieces have taken to the shade as our daughter unveils her latest craft project and finger-painted pictures. We can't chuck them (like many of Aunt Matilda's community college pottery projects we received as gifts, sorry, Auntie M). Instead, we've learned to embrace the aspiring artist.
Which is why we head over to Made, an art boutique in downtown that showcases some of the most avant garde homemade art pieces this town has to offer at dirt-cheap prices. On one hand, a trip to Made inspires the tots with new rainy day ideas; on the other, we stock up on great bedside reading material and one-of-a-kind jewelry pieces.
The inventory is always changing, and the heavy rotation of Valley artists shows that Phoenix does have a burgeoning mix of talented individuals. This is a great way to support the local art scene, and the place to go when you need to buy something for the person who has everything. What better way to say “I love you” than with something handmade from the sweaty palms of a starving artist! Which reminds us that we should probably take Auntie M over for a visit ASAP to get her throwing on the wheel once again.

Suga Pie, Honey Bunch
It never fails; we start a diet and the next thing you know, we're salivating over a box of brownie mix. It doesn't help that Satan's minions have been parading throughout the streets, disguised as Marshmallow Bunny Rabbits and innocent Girl Scouts selling boxes of unavoidable cookie sin. We managed to snarf our way through an entire box of Thin Mints just yesterday.
That's why we absolutely could not resist the Sweetpea Bakery. Tucked away on the corner of Jackson Street in Phoenix, this sweet little shop was the answer to our prayers. The interior alone is a reason to visit: the open, airy feel is warm and inviting. The treats, however, are what really make this place shine.
We moaned our way through decadent peanut butter cookie and jam sandwiches, tart and refreshing mojito cookies, a savory rosemary shortbread (a must), and a luscious chocolate cake. Everything was so delicious that our gorilla turned into a Greedy Gus and finished everything while we were busy taking pictures.

Stone Cold Fashion
“Let it never be said, the romance is dead. Cos there’s so little else occupying my head …. Ruby, Ruby, Ruby, Ruby Ahaa-ahaa-ahaa.” Lately this tune from the Kaiser Chiefs keeps popping in our heads, inspiring another visit to one of our favorite shopping haunts.
And Ruby Boutique does indeed enchant. Tucked in a far-off corner of the Valley, it's worth fighting traffic and conveniently accessible by way of a few highway maneuverings, perfect for rocking out to your favorite tunes along the way. The styles range from classic and contemporary to LA trendy, you're sure to find what you're looking for—a sassy first-date dress, bar-hopping tops and fabulous-fitting slacks. And when a new romance sends the loincloth aflame, Ruby takes care of you with a fabulous selection of skivvies and undergarments.
We already know this boutique is habit-forming. We just finished our mixed tape for the next visit and are already singing out the store's name “ROOOOOBAAAAAAYYYY” in our fake British, indie pop accents.

Grooming the Girl
We noticed our first wrinkle the other night. Because of that, we're sloughing on an overpriced facial cream to combat the wrath of old age.
But we've also learned that getting a good facial and putting our skin in expert hands can really help the temptation to botox the beast away. So get thee to Sofia, pronto. Not only is owner Kerry Berman the eyebrow arch master, she knows a thing or two about maintaining that youthful glow.

So did we make out like Smokey the Bandit during our shopping excursion? Well let's just say we're ready to take our shopping hysteria to Phoenix, and then we'll let our credit card do the talking. A little guilty indulgence never hurt anybody … or did it? |
