March 7th, 2008
We shared our high-school poetry with a BFF and learned a valuable lesson—if you’re ever in need of a good laugh, turn to the key-locked journals of youth and have a piss-of-a-good time reading aloud the words that were written during that hormonally wacked period of your life. We couldn't believe the things we deemed important then (our funeral and who would be on the VIP list; that we would never marry but instead turn into a cat-collecting, chain-smoking writer with 12 lovers) and don't get us started about the epic poem we wrote about the French boyfriend and the time he cheated with a girl whose name rhymed with "pagan."
One of the best things about getting older is looking back and remembering those outrageous antics, the platform shoes and the drama we (made up and) got away with. Now that we've settled into our 30s, we're feeling quite proud of the woman we've become and the fashion choices we've made.
So in celebration of getting older, join us in freeing the inner shopping she-wolf—whether she’s top-side classic, bohemian or glam. Forward this issue to five of your friends and CC picks@phoenixpicks.com; we’ll send you a $20 gift certificate to the fabulous Therapy boutique. It's almost as good as a kegger house party! |

A Wrinkle in Time
We're not the gal who walks in a room perfectly tailored and polished. Instead, we make a ragamuffin entrance with our wrinkled shabby-chic attire. In one sense it's punk rock; in another way it's allowed us to get creative in hiding our inability to properly operate an iron. Thankfully, some recent trends have given us some leeway and street cred … to the dismay of our boss and friends.
When we first visited Babette boutique, we weren’t sure what to make of all their refined goods, but upon closer inspection we found the boutique provided the answer to our messy/sophisticated conundrum. Modern, clean lines lend themselves to strong geometric prints, textures, and an unlikely use of color in Babette’s clothing line. The lightweight microfiber is wearable, accessible and a perfect partner for those desert days and nights when it's impossible to keep any outfit looking crisp.
Trust us—Babette’s clothing line is professional, pristine, and classy. And it’s a great score for us movers and shakers who are too busy to pay the dry cleaner a visit.

Making the Cut
It's been almost three years since we cut our hair. We like to think we embraced our "I don't give a damn" French sensibility but the truth is we've got our hands full, relying on buns to keep us looking decent. Secretly we love that get-up-n-go attitude but do miss the luster and body of a new cut. We've searched high and low for the perfect scissorhands to work magic on our hair—someone who understand that when we say "I trust you" it actually means "don’t go overboard, but make me look hot.”
Thomas Martin is our hairdresser/stylist/psychic guru. Case in point: we needed a major overhaul but had grown attached to our middle part and we wanted something that embraced our gray hairs. Translation: We wanted sexy prep-school mom without the Beckham bob. What we got: Swingy shoulder length and come-hither bangs!
If you’re feeling the itch for a springtime revamp, get thee to Thomas immediately. You’ll totally dig the amenities at the lovely Leidan Mitchell salon and pouring your heart out to Thomas as he coifs you into the glamazon lady that you are.

The Way We Wore
It isn't often that we get dolled up. We've been scolded by coworkers, harangued by our mother and had hints dropped by our gorilla that we would "look so nice in a dress." Baseball tees and broken-in jeans are wardrobe staples. Throw in flip-flops, a dash of mascara, a ponytail and we're good to go.
That's why we were hesitant when we received an invitation to the opening for the jet-set's new dining extravaganza, Roka Akor, a restaurant in Scottsdale that embraces the same hip factor as its London predecessor. Since we never get fancy, we had anxiety about fitting in, fashion-wise. But we threw on a pair of alligator heels, poofed our hair, and out we went ... and we’re so glad we did.
From the top-notch, friendly service to the beautifully arranged dishes, Roka Akor is a great place for a special night out. Roka Akor serves modern Robatayaki (Japanese) cuisine cooked over oak charcoal—delicious mini dishes, replete with familiar and exotic spices, both carnivore and vegetarian-friendly. As we finished our entrées and a yummy dessert, we took in the sleek interior and ambience, suddenly realizing we fit right in!

It Takes Two to Make It Outta Sight
We love ourselves a DIY jewelry night. We gather a few gal pals and away we go stringing gems and semi-precious stones into gaudy, never-to-be-worn necklaces.
So we're a little jealous when we come across ladies who've done a wonderful job of handcrafting artisan jewelry that really works. Simple, stylish and not over the top gaudy—that's what you'll find at the Two Sisters Jewelry Boutique. So support your local artist; and buy an item or three. Enter the code "phoenixpicks" to receive 15 percent off!

It’s Our Treat
In another life we could whip on the liquid liner while driving and talking on the cell phone, but lately we can barely muster mascara. We’re all about “au naturale.”
We adore treat's mineral lip stain, however—it gives us the right color and shine without looking too made up. These little vials of loveliness are not only packed with healing botanicals, they’re edible too! (Though they smell good enough to snack on, we don’t recommend it.)

If You Promise Not to Tell
We miss the days when we'd cat-fight and shuffle through the madness and chaos of a designer sample sale. The rush was invigorating but oy vey!— buyer's remorse can be brutal—especially after a Valentino lace bolero purchase.
Recently we stumbled across an online sample sale that will blow your shopaholic mind: Regent’s Secret. It’s access to items from designer jeans to Chanel suits—affordably priced. It’s invite-only, but click the “register here” box and enter the promo code "secret." Invite your friends! When they shop, you save!

Lately we've been embracing our inner nature child. Who can resist? The wildflowers are in bloom and the hiking is wonderful. Get yourself outdoors, take a drive up South Mountain and enjoy the weather before it becomes a fire hole! |
