life + style in the Valley of the Sun.

October 5th, 2007
It never fails; we go a little bonkers during fashion week. Or at least this is our justification for loving Christopher Kane's spring 2008 collection as much as we do. With its stonewashed ripped jeans, sheer snake print and layered chiffon ruffles, we've returned to the days of “hair metal” at ChrisTown Mall and buying bustier tops at Contempo Casuals. Unfortunately, we were too nerdy to be that girl with the feathered hair and roach clips dangling from her hair (we had the fro-perm); but, boy, did we try to snag her style.
This time around, we're doing "stoner chic" right. We're hot on Kane's trail scouting out Valley boutiques for ruffles, chiffon, everything buckles, acid-washed or purple denim and clingy Alaia-inspired dresses—think Stephanie Seymour, Guns N Roses, "November Rain." We are going to rock the look like hurricanes this season, Aqua Net be damned!
btw: Good News! We get to share more of these guilty pleasures—Phoenix Picks is going bi-weekly in November! So keep spreading the word and don't forget to forward Phoenix Picks to five of your friends and cc: picks@phoenixpicks.com—you could win a gift certificate to Frances Boutique!

A Room of Her Own
In another life, we were fashion designers and our designs were featured at Passage, or at least this is how we felt when we walked into this amazing boutique for the first time. It was like standing in a room of our own creation, surrounded by beautiful garments that inspired and tapped into our creative juices. Passage isn’t just a boutique featuring avant-garde clothing from independent designers; it’s an art gallery where everything’s up for grabs, and we couldn’t leave empty-handed.
We were floored to discover that Passage has been around for years. The boutique boasts a devoted following, and it's understandable why their clientele wouldn't want to let such a secret out. The store stocks the most amazing, limited or one-of-a-kind items.
Passage is a boutique for the fashion intellectual, the fashionista who appreciates good design, and the power couple who travels the world and possesses a distinctive je ne sais quoi style. Passage also gives Phoenix some much-needed fashion cred; and for those of us who’ve lived in bigger cities, it gives us access once again to fashion-forward clothing and accessories.

Breathing Room
We're not big on the meat market-style gym setting. Let's face it, when we get our sweat on, the last thing we need reminding about is how imperfect we are. So when a curvy, made-up Betty slips on the elliptical machine beside us, we’re suddenly over-aware of our belly roll and messy attire. Poofing the greasy ponytail bun and straightening out our wrinkled, ratty t-shirt, we make the best of a now miserable 45-minute workout.
Our shy, insecure self embraces places like the Just Breathe sanctuary. It’s the perfect place to decompress and take a breather. Here, we are welcomed by a soothing water wall, the scent of aromatherapy oil drifting from the massage rooms, and a calming ambiance created by the sanctuary's "green'' philosophy.
Step inside the 900-square-foot room that features a cork floor for a Pilates, yoga or tai chi class. Need a bit more? This wellness sanctuary also has spinning, nutrition and green-living seminars, wellness coaches, message therapy, acupuncture and an in-house chiropractor. We really dig the studio’s Zen-like approach, and we rest easier at night knowing that we can just be in our faded yoga pants and Frank Zappa tee.

Palate Pleasers
"You are pretty," reads Palatte's cash machine message after we pay for our order, making this new breakfast/lunch nook the most flattering eatery in downtown Phoenix. As we browsed for a seat we took in the rustic French/shabby-chic décor and checked out the house and garden goods that were showcased throughout the restaurant.
We headed outside, joining the very merry Saturday morning crowd as they sipped their coffee. Then we dug into some "Mish Mash" and enjoyed the scent of snickerdoodle drifting from the historic-house-turned-funky-eatery.
Breakfast dining is finally taking off in Phoenix and we're pleased to get such a classy, kid-friendly dining spot in the neighborhood. With its spacious outdoor seating, good coffee and delish pastries, nothing will keep us from returning time and time again. Not even a desert winter. We figure when it’s below 60 degrees, this place is definitely the spot to rock our homemade scarves and wool coats. After all, we are pretty … even with a cold, red, runny nose.

Blending in with the Crowd
Your best girlfriends are doing an intervention, dragging you out of your post-break-up-slump by taking you for a girl’s night out. They love being free and available and don’t understand why you aren’t having the time of your life. You’re looking forward to it, until you open your closet and find your entire wardrobe is nothing more than sweat pants, tank tops, hoodies and flip flops.
This is why we’re sending you to Blend. For us, a little bargain hunting always cured those break-up blues, and we know you’ll find the perfect sexy-hot outfit at this chic outlet boutique. Jam-packed with goodies, you’ll find yourself hunting through racks of bargain-priced pieces by Stella McCartney, Trina Turk, T-Bags, Susana Monaco and more. Most are marked down from 50 to 90 percent.
Of course, your friends drag you to the one bar where ex just happens to be. He sees you dressed to kill, his eyes light up and suddenly he feels there’s meaning to his existence again. But you’re not too sure. Perhaps being single, shiny and carefree isn’t such a bad thing … perhaps!

Calling all Models, Actors and Screenwriters
Forget rehab and dining at Hollywood hot spots—a real celeb-in-training needs an incognito place where she can camp out in style, refresh, and lay out by the pool during the winter months. The Fire Sky Resort is paparazzi-free and nestled right in the heart of Scottsdale. Shop till you drop in Old Town, the Waterfront and Fashion Square, which are minutes away from this poshy hotspot.
Currently on the Rachel Zoe diet? No Problem. Taggia, a restaurant located on the premises, serves up healthy and organic Mediterranean-inspired dishes that are decadently good and somewhat low-calorie. Take your dinner on the patio where eclectic music and a cool breeze are reminiscent of a seaside restaurant on the Italian Riviera.
The resort itself inspires immediate relaxation as you walk to your guest room, surrounded by the elements of nature—fire, water, earth and air. Take advantage of the sandy-bottom pool and catch up on the latest Britney-train-wreck fiasco in one of the poolside cabanas. After a bit of pampering at the Jurlique spa and a day at the pool, you'll be ready for Monday's audition.

We're Riding with Lady Luck
Madame Fortuna is a woman you want in your life. Legend has it that when you wear one of her custom necklaces, good things happen. We believe it. Her relic necklaces can be filed with anything under the sun—Fido's fur, baby's first tooth or a hand-written note.
Our mother once told us to keep a strand of lover's hair. If he does you wrong, do a little voodoo with it. Send a clear message to lover: don’t mess with your heart, or you'll voodoo his head bald.

Handbags with a Conscience
There was a time when we thought about joining the Peace Corps, but we're too urban to give up things like stilettos and hair dryers. Instead, we leave it to people like Helen Hoppock, who managed to help others then and help us now, by providing super chic handbags stateside.
Each Helena de Natalio creation is shaped by her time in Paraguay, Argentina, with textiles and flair that capture the warmth of South America. Wherever we travel next, we're taking one of these sumptuous totes along!

Five and Dime
A woman after our own heart has recollections of spending hours at five and dime stores buying rainbow erasers and writing tablets. So when we found Littleput Pendants we were smitten—the charms are made from fine papers, so we can coordinate our thriftiness with our overpriced outfits.
They're perfect for gifts, and each comes with a complimentary slide-top box and a pretty organza ribbon, so the wrapping is done. Get the Phoenix Picks exclusive $1 shipping rate on your pendant order by typing PHX in the message box at checkout!

It's French for Hooter Hiders
For the nursing mother, there's bound to be an uncomfortable moment when you're Sunday brunching with your single girlfriends and new baby. Baby reaches for the boob. You smile nervously hoping baby’s mood will pass, and the friends didn’t notice. But your closest girlfriend says, "Please don't show us your girls."
No worries! Toss on the Bebe au Lait cover and girlfriend can finish her mimosa, baby can nurse, and you are regarded as the most fashionably chic momma of the group. (Btw, this makes a great shower gift!)

What a Treat!
Diet Coke. Splenda. Hand lotion. Confused? So were we. Normally we hate things without sugar with a passion, but the new Sugar Free Therapy hand butter from Treat Beauty made us reconsider our reservations.
Even without all the fillers (the lotion is fragrance-, lanolin- and paraben-free), the mixture is ultra rich, providing relief to the driest of skin. What’s more, it leaves your hands smooth, not greasy, proving once and for all that you don’t need sugar to be pretty darn sweet.

We predict that Stephanie and her ex-beau Axl Rose circa 1991 will make a comeback as style icons for 2008. So pull out those full-length mirrors and "Sweet Child O' Mine" from that dusty old CD case and start practicing your Axl "snake dance." Before you know it, you'll be too cool for skinny jeans. |
